Si hay una película que refleja fielmente la moda de los 2000 esa es, ni más ni menos, que 'Coyote Ugly'. Jeans de tiro bajo, crop tops, cinturones con grandes hebillas, botas vaqueras y chokers: un estilo con influencias noventeras que , sin saberlo, tendría una gran influencia durante décadas. ¿La prueba? El espacio que ocupan nuestros millones de crop tops y chokers en nuestro armario veintiún años después.

No es nada fácil asociar un estilo a una película, algo que nos resulta tremendamente sencillo si hablamos de 'Coyote Ugly'. You only have to see in the window of any store a combination of shorts, a T-shirt tied at the waist and a big belt and realize that the vibes of the Coyote bar are more present than ever. And who was the artist in charge of designing the tremendous wardrobe that would mark a before and after in the productions of the XXI century? Well, of course, the great and unique Marlene Stewart.

La trayectoria de Marlene Stewart es impecable. No solo fue la responsable de dar vida a los looks de las chicas del bar Coyote, sino que fue la diseñadora de vestuario de la inigualable Madonna. La estética que rodea al bar Coyote es muy peculiar, pero logra mimetizarse a las mil maravillas con el estilo que llevan las chicas: "En cuanto al vestuario de 'Coyote Ugly', quería asegurarme de incluir en él la idea original del bar. Ese bar solía atraer a algunos motociclistas y quería usar esa ventaja para crear la estética. Esto se puede ver en el personaje de Maria Bello, Lil, la encargada del bar. Ella es una mujer fuerte pero con un toque de dulzura. No es realmente una motera, pero lleva chalecos de cuero, camisetas ajustadas, botas y accesorios como si lo fuera", nos cuenta la diseñadora. 

The aesthetics surrounding the Coyote bar are very peculiar, but it manages to blend in perfectly with the style of the girls: "As for 'Coyote Ugly', I wanted to make sure we included the original idea of the bar in the meat packing district —hogs and heffers— . The bar used to attract some bikers and I wanted to use that edge to inform. María Bello’s character is a strong woman with a tough edge... not really full on biker but updated biker leather vests and tight T-shirts’, biker boots and accessories", the designer tells us.

"Decidimos añadir un tema del oeste en forma de accesorios: hebillas grandes en los cinturones, botas camperas y complementos para algunas de las chicas, incluida Piper". Violet Sanford, el personaje interpretado por Piper Perabo, es la protagonista de la producción: una chica de un hogar humilde, con el valor suficiente para mudarse sola a NYC y hacer realidad su sueño de convertirse en una cantante profesional. "El arco de su personaje era ser una chica que va desde su pueblo a la gran ciudad y ver la transformación de acabar siendo una cantante de éxito en Nueva York. Por eso, añadimos diamantes de imitación —que fue un factor de diseño clave para ella— y llevaba camisetas recortadas con pantalones vaqueros y de cuero. Sin embargo, su personaje mantuvo la dulzura y la feminidad tan delicada que la caracterizaba a pesar de esta transición", nos explica Marlene. 

"We  then added a western theme in the way of accessories - belt buckles, boots and accessories for some of the girls, including Piper". Violet Sanford, the character played by Piper Perabo, is the protagonist of the production: a girl from a humble home, brave enough to move alone to NYC and realize her dream of becoming a professional singer. "The arc of her charcoal was to come from a small town girl to the big city and see a transformation into a successful singer in NYC —we added rhinestones as a key design factor for her and she wore “Americana “ t-shirts and cropped them with her jeans and leather pants. Her character retained a sweetness and soft femininity even though she transitioned", Marlene explains us.

La diseñadora de vestuario continúa: "En cambio, para los personajes de Tyra Banks y Bridgette Moynihan utilicé una silueta de los años 70: pantalones de campana y de tiro bajo, además de flecos y cuero". 

The costume designer continues: "For the other girls like Tyra Banks and Bridgette Moynihan I used a 70’s silhouette: small bell bottom pants - low rise with. Fringe or soft leather tops".

A pesar de que el vestuario de una producción tiene que tener un gran valor estético, es importante que no se pierda de vista su principal función: permitir a los actores y actrices desarrollar sin problemas su papel: "Lo más importante de los trajes de 'Coyote Ugly' es que los personajes tenían que ser capaces de bailar con los trajes. Eran personajes femeninos fuertes que trabajan en sus habilidades de atender el bar y bailar; todas ellas tenían que ser únicas a su propia manera, nos divertimos mucho con esta película", confiesa Stewart. 

Although the costumes of a production must have a great aesthetic value, it is important not to lose sight of its main function: to allow the actors and actresses to develop their roles without problems: "Most importantly characters had to be able to dance in the costumes. Strong female characters who were working their bar tending skills and dancing. They all had to be unique in their own way. We had so much fun on this movie", Stewart confesses.

Una chica que lucha por perseguir sus sueños, un vestuario de altura y la creación de 'Can't Fight the Moonlight', ¿puede haber una combinación mejor? 'Coyote Ugly' es —y será— una de las películas referentes de principios de los 2000 que, en cuestión de estilo, no morirá jamás. ¿Quién nos iba a decir que 20 años después vestiríamos una versión un poco más actualizada (nótese el cambio de los jeans de tiro bajo por los de tiro alto, gracias a Dios) de Violet Sanford? Los crop tops, los chokers y los chalecos nos han demostrado que, aunque no lo creamos, las tendencias siempre vuelven y que, por lo tanto, gracias a producciones como 'Coyote Ugly', siempre podremos encontrar inspiración en tesoros cinematográficos que fueron un referente estilístico y un icono para toda una época. 

A girl who fights to pursue her dreams, a high class wardrobe and the creation of 'Can't Fight the Moonlight', can there be a better combination? 'Coyote Ugly' is —and will be— one of the reference films of the early 2000's that, in terms of style, will never die. Who would have thought that 20 years later we would be wearing a slightly more updated version (note the change from low rise jeans to high rise jeans, thank God) of Violet Sanford? Crop tops, chokers and vests have shown us that, believe it or not, trends always come back and that, therefore, thanks to productions like 'Coyote Ugly', we can always find inspiration in cinematic treasures that were a stylistic reference and an icon for an entire era.
