Sin ir más lejos, hace 10 años se estrenó 'Monte Carlo', una entretenida película en la que pudimos ver a Selena Gomez encarnar a Grace, una chica de Texas que se va de viaje a París con su amiga y su hermanastra, donde su vida da un vuelco de 180 grados cuando descubre que comparte parecido con una británica famosa y rica llamada Cordelia. Y sí, obviamente se hace pasar por ella, porque... ¿quién no lo haría?Without going any further, 10 years ago 'Monte Carlo' was released, an entertaining movie in which we could see Selena Gomez as Grace, a girl from Texas who goes on a trip to Paris with her friend and her stepsister, where her life takes a 180-degree turn when she discovers that she shares a resemblance with a famous and rich British girl named Cordelia. And yes, she obviously impersonates her, because... who wouldn't?

Esta película tuvo una gran acogida en cines de todo el mundo y, aunque la trama principal está acaparada por los líos de Grace haciéndose pasar por Cordelia, uno de los puntos fuertes de esta producción es el protagonismo que se le da a las subtramas, encabezadas por las maravillosas actuaciones de Katie Cassidy y Leighton Meester (acompañadas por Cory Monteith y Luke Bracey).
This film was very well received in cinemas around the world and, although the main plot is centred on Grace's adventures posing as Cordelia, one of the strengths of this production is the prominence given to the subplots, led by the wonderful performances of Katie Cassidy and Leighton Meester (accompanied by Cory Monteith and Luke Bracey).

Escenas divertidas, historias personales con las que puedes identificarte fácilmente y, cómo no, un vestuario de infarto que fue la guinda del pastel a una producción jovial, amena y muy acogedora. Para saber un poco más sobre ello, he tenido el placer de hablar con Shay Cunliffe, la diseñadora de vestuario de 'Monte Carlo' y la responsable de que ahora todas queramos el armario de Cordelia.
Funny scenes, personal stories that you can easily identify with and, of course, heart-stopping costumes were the icing on the cake of a jovial, entertaining and very welcoming production. To find out a little more about it, I had the pleasure of talking to Shay Cunliffe, the costume designer of 'Monte Carlo' and the person responsible for the fact that now we all want Cordelia's wardrobe.

El vestuario juega un papel muy importante en todas las producciones, ya que es el elemento clave que nos permite identificar y ver como tal a un personaje. Sin embargo, este elemento cobra aún más importancia cuando es, en gran medida, el responsable visual de que los espectadores puedan diferenciar a dos personajes distintos interpretados por una misma persona, en este caso, Selena Gomez. ¿Cuál fue la inspiración para el estilo de Grace y Cordelia? Shay nos lo cuenta: "Siempre hago mucha investigación visual cuando creo personajes. En el caso de Grace, fue una amalgama de muchas fotos de street style de chicas jóvenes. Encontré una gran foto de Kate Moss que me inspiró para el primer look de Cordelia (pantalones de cuero, chaqueta de crepé crema). Otros looks se inspiraron en prendas individuales que descubrí mientras buscaba su vestuario".
Costumes play a very important role in all productions, as they are the key element that allows us to identify and see a character as such. However, this element becomes even more important when it is, to a large extent, visually responsible for the viewers being able to differentiate between two different characters played by the same person, in this case, Selena Gomez. What was the inspiration for Grace and Cordelia's style? Shay tells us: "I always do a lot of visual research when creating characters: Grace was an amalgam of a lot of young street style pics; I found a great Kate Moss pic which inspired me for Cordelia’s first look (leather pants, cream crepe jacket). Other looks were actually inspired by great individual garments I discovered while sourcing her wardrobe".

Uno de los looks que más impactan a lo largo de la película es el vestido de fiesta de Selena Gomez que combina, ni más de menos, con unas botas camperas como lo haría una buena chica de Texas: "Quería que el vestido de baile de Grace fuera muy clásico y de cuento de hadas y descubrí su vestido vintage de Oscar de la Renta en Lily et cie. en Los Ángeles. Me lo enviaron a Budapest, donde estábamos rodando", nos explica la diseñadora.
One of the most striking looks throughout the film is Selena Gomez's party dress, which she pairs with nothing less than a pair of cowboy boots like a good Texas girl will do: "I wanted Grace’s ball gown to be very classic & fairy tale and discovered her vintage Oscar de la Renta gown at Lily et cie. in L.A. They shipped it out to me in Budapest, where we were shooting", the designer explains.

Los que habéis visto la película sabéis que el desencadenante de más de una aventura es un maravilloso collar Bvlgari: "El collar fue creado para nosotros por Bvlgari a partir de una fotografía vintage de un collar de esmeraldas épicas, pero utilizaron un cristal azul para recrear los zafiros", nos cuenta Shay.
Those of you who have seen the film know that the trigger for more than one adventure is a wonderful Bvlgari necklace: "The necklace was created for us by Bvlgari from a vintage photograph of an epic emerald necklace, but they used a blue glass to recreate sapphires", Shay tells us.

Es muy difícil escoger un vestido favorito entre todos los que llegamos a ver en esta película, pero tenemos que admitir que el amarillo lucido por Katie fue amor a primera vista: "El vestido amarillo de Katie Cassidy es mi traje favorito de la película. Fue una creación conjunta con el taller de un diseñador de alta costura de Budapest. Lamento mucho no poder recordar su nombre ahora mismo; era un diseñador maravilloso con un equipo maravilloso", confiesa Shay Cunliffe.
It's very difficult to pick a favourite dress among all the ones we got to see in this film, but we have to admit that the yellow one worn by Katie was love at first sight: "Katie Cassidy’s yellow dress is absolutely my own favorite costume in the movie! It was a joint creation with myself and a Budapest couture designer’s atelier. He was a wonderful designer with a wonderful team", says Shay Cunliffe.

'Monte Carlo' es una película que rezuma magia, no solo por la trama, sino por las increíbles localizaciones que nos muestra. Un dato sobre ella que no es muy conocido, es que gran parte de la película tuvo lugar en Budapest. ¿Sabéis el maravilloso recinto para celebrar el baile en honor a Cordelia? Pues era, nada más y nada menos, que el Stefánia Palace de Budapest. Si queréis saber cómo debió ser trabajar en esta producción de ensueño, no os perdáis la respuesta de su diseñadora: "Me encantó trabajar en esta película, aunque fue todo un reto crear un vestuario de tan alto diseño con un presupuesto en un país [Hungría] que no goza de todos los recursos de Nueva York, París o Los Ángeles. Nuestro director, Tom Bezucha, se implicó mucho en el vestuario de forma inspiradora, nuestros decorados y localizaciones eran fabulosos y daban un tono precioso, y nuestras encantadoras actrices hicieron que todo funcionara. También me encantó Budapest y disfruté de estar allí todos los días".
'Monte Carlo' is a film that oozes magic, not only because of the plot, but also because of the incredible locations it shows us. A little known fact about it is that a large part of the film took place in Budapest. Do you know the marvellous venue for the ball in honour of Cordelia? It was none other than the Stefánia Palace in Budapest. If you want to know what it must have been like to work on this dream production, don't miss the designer's response: "I loved working on this film although it was super challenging creating such high design costumes on a budget in a country that doesn’t enjoy all the resources of NY, Paris, L.A. Our director Tom Bezucha was very involved with the costumes in an inspiring way, our sets/locations were fabulous and set the tone beautifully, and our lovely actresses made everything work. I also loved Budapest and enjoyed being there every day".

Antes hablábamos del éxito de esta película y a qué factores podía deberse. Esta producción tiene muchos puntos fuertes: una trama que engancha porque te mantiene en vilo por no saber cuándo todo se puede venir abajo, una actuaciones ejemplares por parte de magníficos actores (mención especial a Cory), unos paisajes que te hacen teletransportarte a París y a Monte Carlo desde el sofá de tu casa, y un vestuario que no hubiésemos podido imaginar ni en nuestros mejores sueños. Supongo que cuando Taylor Swift dijo eso de 'darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream', se inspiró en los maravillosos vestidos de esta película (no tengo pruebas, pero tampoco dudas). Y es una realidad que sin el espectacular vestuario creado por Shay Cunliffe, esta película hubiese perdido toda su magia. Gracias, Shay, por permitirnos soñar despiertas.
Earlier we talked about the success of this film and to what factors it could be due. This production has many strong points: a plot that hooks you because it keeps you in suspense for not knowing when everything can fall apart, exemplary performances by magnificent actors (special mention to Cory), landscapes that make you teleport to Paris and Monte Carlo from the sofa of your home, and a wardrobe that we could not have imagined even in our best dreams. I guess when Taylor Swift said that 'darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream', she was inspired by the marvellous dresses in this film (I have no proof, but no doubts either). And it is a reality that without the spectacular costumes created by Shay Cunliffe, this film would have lost all its magic. Thank you, Shay, for allowing us to daydream.
