SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'THE CHEETAH GIRLS'

'Cause we are sisters, we stand together... Es difícil leerlo sin cantarlo, ¿verdad? No es la primera vez que hablamos de producciones de Disney (ni será la última), pero la ocasión lo merece. A nivel estético, las películas de Disney Channel están muy trabajadas, aunque tenemos que admitir que hay una que destaca y sobresale de todas las demás: 'The Cheetah Girls'.

'Cause we are sisters, we stand together... It's hard to read it without singing it, isn't it? This is not the first time we talk about Disney productions (nor will it be the last), but the occasion deserves it. Aesthetically, Disney Channel movies are very well crafted, although we have to admit that there is one that stands out from all the others: 'The Cheetah Girls'.

Reconozcámoslo, 'The Cheetah Girls' es la maravillosa culpable de que muchos de nosotros estemos in love con el animal print y no es para menos. Los que crecisteis viendo esta película, ya sabéis a que me estoy refiriendo: estampado de guepardo por doquier, en bolsos, abrigos, pantalones, botas y accesorios. Y eso no es todo. Si por algo se caracterizaban las cheetahs era por vestir súper extremadas y con complementos que subían los looks a otro nivel. ¿Quién no ha soñado nunca con tener ese increíble abrigo de Galleria (Raven-Symoné) con pelo sintético en las mangas y en el cuello? En definitiva, todo un sueño estilístico. 

Let's face it, 'The Cheetah Girls' is the wonderful culprit that many of us are in love with animal print and it's no wonder. Those of you who grew up watching this movie, already know what I'm referring to: cheetah print everywhere, on bags, coats, pants, boots and accessories. And that's not all. If the cheetahs were known for something, it was for dressing super extreme and with accessories that raised the looks to another level. Who has never dreamed of having that incredible coat from Galleria (Raven-Symoné) with synthetic fur on the wrists and around the neck? In short, it was a stylistic dream.

Podríamos pasarnos horas hablando sobre cómo de espectaculares eran los outfits de Galleria (Raven-Symoné), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams) y Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan), pero creo que es mucho mejor saber de primera mano cómo se crearon estos looks. Para ello, doy paso a la entrevista con Resa McConaghy, la diseñadora de vestuario de 'The Cheetah Girls'.

We could spend hours talking about how spectacular the outfits of Galleria (Raven-Symoné), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams) and Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan) were, but I think it's much better to know firsthand how these looks were created. To that end, I had the pleasure of talking to Resa McConaghy, the costume designer for 'The Cheetah Girls'.

El estilo de las cuatro protagonistas de 'The Cheetah Girls' está muy definido y muy trabajado. Cada detalle, cada complemento, todo tiene una relación y un sentido con la personalidad del personaje. ¿Cuál fue la inspiración para ellas? Resa nos lo cuenta: "Por supuesto, la inspiración obvia fue el guepardo. Busqué ropa y telas que tuvieran estampados de guepardos o guepardos. Estos se utilizaron de diversas formas. En sus estilismos del día a día diseñamos moda habitual con el animal print y las texturas animales. En términos de textura, usamos tipos de tela de piel sintética. Recuerdo que Galleria tenía un abrigo de Miss Sixties que tenía una exuberante piel sintética alrededor del cuello, en la parte delantera y en las muñecas. También tenía una gorra de guepardo de piel sintética azul y un conjunto con el bolso a juego. En segundo lugar estaban los personajes, como los había escrito Deborah Gregory. Era importante que cada guepardo fuera fiel a lo que era".

The style of the four main characters of 'The Cheetah Girls' is very well defined and very well worked. Every detail, every accessory, everything has a relationship and a meaning with the character's personality. What was the inspiration for them? Resa tells us: "Of course, the obvious inspiration was 'Cheetah'. I searched for clothes and fabrics that had cheetah or cheetah-like prints on them. These were used in various ways. In their day to day outfits we styled regular fashion with the animal print and animal textures. In terms of texture we used fake fur types of fabric. I recall Galleria having a Miss Sixties coat that had a lush fake fur exploding around the neck, down the front and from the wrists. She also had a blue fake fur cheetah cap and purse set. Second were the characters, as Deborah Gregory had written them. It was important that each Cheetah be true to who she was".

La diseñadora continúa: "En tercer lugar, estaban las visiones de los actores sobre su personaje. Las chicas estaban todas muy emocionadas, llenas de ideas y fueron muy inspiradoras para mí. No solo tuve encuentros con cada chica individualmente, sino que también tuvimos presentaciones en grupo y lluvia de ideas. Además tenía que mantenerlas jóvenes. Son todas adolescentes. Sin embargo, las propias chicas ya eran bastante sofisticadas. Para este propósito usé mucho color y mucha diversión en el estilismo".

The designer continues: "Third were the actors’ visions of their character. The girls were all very thrilled, filled with ideas and they were very inspiring to me. Not only did I have fittings with each girl individually, but we had group presentations and brain storming. Fourth, I had to keep them young looking. They are aMer all young teens. Yet, the girls themselves were already fairly sophisticated. For this purpose I used lots of colour, and lots of fun in styling".

Como hemos comentado, los accesorios fueron una parte muy importante del vestuario de las cheetahs, no solo porque le daban carácter a cada personaje, sino porque conseguían que los looks fuesen aún más únicos: "Los accesorios fueron muy importantes. Los primeros accesorios que compré para las chicas fueron en Soho, Nueva York. Cada Cheetah tenía un toque especial. Recuerdo que Aqua amaba los corazones. Recuerdo que un día Kiely vino a verme con un corazón brillante que compró y me preguntó si Aqua podía usar corazones. Siendo de Texas, usaba botas de vaquero falsas. Galleria, siendo la líder del grupo llevaba estrellas. Tenía una gran hebilla de estrella, collares y pendientes de estrella. Chanel era más un ‘todo vale’, ya que ella era la compradora. Le gustaban los aros grandes y los anillos grandes. Dorinda era de una familia pobre. Para ella optamos por un divertido ‘biker look’. Tenía un montón de cinturones con tachuelas y accesorios con cadena", nos cuenta la diseñadora.

As we have already mentioned, accessories were a very important part of the cheetahs' wardrobe. Not only because they gave personality to each character, but also because they made the looks even more unique: "Accessories were very important. The first accessories I bought for the girls were in Soho, New York City. Each Cheetah girl had a special touch. I remember Aqua loved hearts. I recall one day Kiely came to me with a sparkly heart she bought, and asked if Aqua could wear hearts. Being from Texas, she wore faux cowboy boots. Galleria, being the leader of the group wore stars. She had a great Star buckle, star necklaces and earrings. Chanel was more anything goes, as she was the shopper. She liked big hoops and big rings. Dorinda was from a poor family. She was styled in a fun young biker look. She had a lot of cuffs and belts with studs or chain like feel", the designer tells us.

Los outfits que lucen las protagonistas en las escenas de su día a día son una auténtica maravilla, pero los looks de sus actuaciones son completamente icónicos. Si os habéis fijado, en cada actuación hay un hilo conductor estético, algo que hace que todas lleven el mismo estilo pero adaptado a la personalidad y gusto de cada una, que es lo que hace que estos looks sean tan especiales. Este hecho nos lleva a una inevitable pregunta: ¿Se creaban estos trajes especialmente para ellas? La respuesta de Resa es clara: "¡Sí!". Atentos a los detalles que la artista nos da de cada performance: 

The outfits worn by the protagonists in their day-to-day scenes are a real wonder, but the looks from their performances are completely iconic. If you have noticed, in each performance there is a common aesthetic thread, something that makes them all wear the same style but adapted to the personality and taste of each one, which is what makes these looks so special. This fact leads us to an inevitable question: Were these outfits created especially for them? Resa's answer is clear: "Yes!". Pay attention to the details that the artist gives us about each performance:

Together We Can 

"Es una mezcla de piezas compradas y piezas hechas. Los tops de Galleria y Chanel eran básicos. Luego agregué una textura peluda alrededor de los cuellos y en los frentes para hacer como una idea de piel. Eso estaba hecho de hilo de lana. Hice la faja y la teñí a medida. Hicimos todas las crinolinas de Aqua. Eso fue algo que pidió Keily. Me encantó la idea. Agregamos un estampado de guepardo en piel sintética alrededor del cuello de su chaleco de mezclilla. Para Dorinda, le agregué rayas de guepardo a los lados de sus jeans. Muchas de sus muñequeras y cinturones fueron hechos a medida".

Together We Can 

"Is a mix of bought pieces & made pieces. The tops on Galleria and Chanel were basics. Then I added a shaggy texture around the necks and down the fronts to make like a fur idea. That was made out of wool yarn. I had the sash made, and custom dyed it. 

We made all of Aqua’s crinolines. That was something Keily requested. I loved the idea. We added a cheetah print in fake fur around her denim vest’s collar. 

For Dorinda, I had cheetah stripes added to the sides of her jeans. A lot of her wrist bands and belts were custom made".

Cinderella

"Diseñé cada atuendo especialmente para cada chica guepardo. Por supuesto, trabajé muy de cerca con las chicas para asegurar que sus personajes se mantuvieran fieles. Los atuendos fueron hechos en nuestro estudio. El estampado de Cheetah se compró en Canal Street, Nueva York. Por supuesto, se compraron las botas, así como las medias. Fueron comprados en Toronto. Todos los accesorios fueron hechos en nuestro estudio".

Cinderella

"I designed each outfit especially for each Cheetah. Of course I worked very closely with the girls to ensure their characters remained true. The outfits were made in our studio. The Cheetah print was bought on Canal Street, New York City. Of course the boots were bought, as well as the stockings. They were bought in Toronto. All of the accessories were made in our studio".

Girl Power

"Este fue un mix entre construcción y compra. La falda y la pieza de la cabeza que lleva Chanel fueron hechas a medida, la chaqueta de Galleria es Versace. Fue tan genial que no pude resistirme a comprarla. Agregué las brillantes "Cheetah Girls" en la parte superior debajo de él, y su fajín se hizo en nuestro estudio. La falda y el fajín de Aqua fueron hechos a medida. El atuendo de Dorinda fue hecho exclusivamente para ella, excepto las botas".

Girl Power

"This was a mix’n’match styling and building job. Chanel’s skirt and head piece were custom made, Galleria’s jacket is a Versace. It was so cool, that I couldn’t resist putting out the money. I added the sparkly 'Cheetah Girls' to the top under it, and her sash was made in our studio. Aqua’s skirt and sash were custom made. Dorinda’s outfit was entirely made especially for her, except the motorcycle boots".

Cheetah Sisters 

"Estos conjuntos son una evolución interesante. Estábamos filmando afuera por la noche, ¡y hacía FRÍO! Creo que fue a finales de noviembre. Disney no quería que las chicas se enfermaran, por supuesto. Comenzó con los chándales de terciopelo, que estaban de moda en ese entonces. Cada chica eligió su propio color. Teñí al menos uno para obtener el color correcto. Estaban adornadas con estampados de guepardos. Todo lo demás estaba hecho. Los chalecos inferiores estaban forrados con una capa de tejido térmico acolchado. Las diademas también. Todos los diamantes de imitación fueron agregados por mi equipo. De hecho, recuerdo haber tachonado el chaleco de Dorinda".

Cheetah Sisters

"These outfits are an interesting evolution. We were shooting outside at night, and it was COLD! I think it was late November. Disney didn’t want the girls getting sick, of course. It started with velour track suits, which were the rage back then. Each girl picked her own colour. I dyed at least one to get the right colour. They were trimmed with Cheetah prints. Everything else was made. The under vests were lined with a layer of a quilted thermal fabric. The headbands as well. All of the rhinestones were added by my team. I actually recall studding Dorinda’s vest myself".

¿Increíble, verdad? Y aunque parezca mentira, ya hace 18 años desde que se estrenó la película, pero ¿qué tendencias seguirían las cheetahs si la película se rodase en la actualidad? "Me inclinaría más por las tendencias de moda sostenibles. Es una de las formas en que podemos ayudar a nuestro planeta en el futuro. Por lo tanto, esto significaría tantas telas como sea posible sin sintéticos. Nos gusta pensar que estamos reciclando cuando donamos nuestra ropa vieja a organizaciones benéficas o la ponemos en el contenedor de una tienda para reutilizarla. No está funcionando muy bien. Por supuesto, los ideales de esta idea no podían sobrepasar el aspecto de las Cheetah Girls. Sin embargo, sería fabuloso liderar el camino hacia un futuro más verde. De todos modos, siempre vi a las Cheetahs como líderes culturales juveniles. También usaría pintura. Pintaría estampados de guepardos y otros diseños en algunas de las prendas, haría arte con ellas. Lo haría tan genial, que las piezas se pudieran cortar, enmarcar y convertirse en arte que se pudiera colgar en una pared", nos cuenta Resa.

Incredible, isn't it? And, believe it or not, it's been 18 years since the film was released, which brings us to the last question: What trends would the cheetahs follow if the film were shot in the present day? "I would go more with sustainable fashion trends. It’s one of the ways we can help our planet for the future. So, this would mean as many fabrics as possible that are without  synthetics. We like to think that we are recycling when we donate our old clothes to charities, or put them in a shop’s bin for repurposing. It’s not working out very well. Of course the ideals of this idea could not overrun the look of the Cheetah Girls. Yet, it would be fabulous to leading the way to a greener future. After all, I always saw the Cheetahs as youth cultural leaders. I would also use paint. I would paint Cheetah print and other designs on some of the clothes, make art out of them. I would make it so cool, that the pieces could be cut up, framed and become art you could hang on a wall", Resa explains.

Conocer cómo se crearon unos looks que han sido un referente para toda una generación es algo indescriptible. Los fans de esta película y del increíble trabajo de Resa estaréis de acuerdo conmigo cuando digo que el vestuario de esta producción no es que sea único, es que es irrepetible. Las cheetahs no hubiesen sido igual, ni hubiesen inspirado a tanta gente sin esos atuendos tan originales y llenos de personalidad que nos ayudaron a muchos de nosotros a atrevernos y salir de nuestra zona de confort. Sin duda alguna y, aunque seguiremos hablando del vestuario de algunas producciones de Disney más, no hay (ni habrá nunca) un vestuario tan icónico como el que nos regaló Resa McConaghy. 

Knowing how some of the outfits that have been a reference for a whole generation were created is something indescribable. The fans of this film and of Resa's incredible work will agree with me when I say that the costumes in this production are not unique, it is unrepeatable. The cheetah girls would not have been the same, nor would they have reached the soul of so many people without those outfits so original and full of personality that helped many of us to find our identity and get out of our comfort zone. Undoubtedly, and although we will continue to talk about the costumes of some more Disney productions, there is (and will never be) a wardrobe as iconic as the one Resa McConaghy gave us.
