Es casi imposible hablar de estos términos sin acordarnos de inmediato de unos jóvenes Robert Pattinson y Kristen Stewart encarnando a unos personajes que, en cuestión de nada y menos, lograron desencadenar un gran fenómeno de masas mundial bajo el nombre de la ya mítica producción cinematográfica 'Crepúsculo'.

It is almost impossible to talk about these terms without immediately remembering a young Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart embodying characters that managed to unleash a huge worldwide mass phenomenon under the name of the now mythical film production 'Twilight'.

Esta saga, basada en los libros de Stephenie Meyer, causó un revuelo internacional nada más estrenarse. Fans de todo el mundo se dividieron entre el team Edward (Robert Pattinson) y el team Jacob (Taylor Lautner), mientras, a la vez, todas deseaban ser Bella (Kristen Stewart). Pero, ¿qué tiene 'Crepúsculo' para que se convirtiera en semejante fenómeno? Fácil: una trama de un amor casi imposible —eso siempre funciona—, un toque de fantasía, una misteriosa ciudad y un vestuario que plasma a las mil maravillas las identidades de los personajes.
Y para saber cómo se creó el estilo de Bella o cuál fue la inspiración para vestir a los Cullen, he tenido el gran placer de hablar con Wendy Chuck, la diseñadora de vestuario de ‘Crepúsculo’, la primera película donde todo empezó.
This saga, based on the books by Stephenie Meyer, caused an international stir as soon as it was released. Fans from all over the world were divided between team Edward (Robert Pattinson) and team Jacob (Taylor Lautner), while, at the same time, everyone wanted to be Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart). But what is it about 'Twilight' that made it such a phenomenon? Easy: a plot of an almost impossible love —that always works—, a touch of fantasy, a mysterious town, and a wardrobe that perfectly captures the identities of the characters.
To find out how Bella's style was created or what was the inspiration to dress the Cullens, I had the great pleasure of talking to Wendy Chuck, the costume designer of ‘Twilight’, the first movie where it all started.

El estilo de Bella Swan en ‘Crepúsculo’ fue un referente para millones de fans de todo el mundo, pero ¿cómo se creó el estilo del personaje de Kristen Stewart? Wendy nos lo cuenta: "Siempre me pareció que Bella era "de la tierra" y que, cuando se mudó de su vida con su madre en Arizona, pensé que lo mejor era ponerle una paleta más cálida y hacerla un poco más bohemia y marimacho, si se quiere decir así... y que tuviera una colección de ropa más ecléctica, ya sea de las manos de su madre o de hallazgos de tiendas de segunda mano, incluso del vestuario de Charlie... De ahí pasa a un ambiente más romántico con su creciente amor por Edward, que culmina cuando adopta la paleta azul de Cullens al final de 'Crepúsculo' en el baile de graduación. También trabajé para que Bella pareciera que no sabía cómo vestirse para su nueva ubicación y estaba un poco fuera de lugar cuando llegó allí."
Bella Swan's style in ‘Twilight’ was a benchmark for millions of fans around the world, but how was Kristen Stewart's character's style created? Wendy tells us: "I always felt Bella was “from the earth” and as she was moving from her life with her mom in Arizona thought best to pitch her in a warmer pallet and as a way to make her a bit more bohemian, and tomboy if you will… and that she would have a more eclectic collection of clothes from either moms hand me downs or thrift store finds, even Charlie's wardrobe…she moves from that to a more romantic vibe with her growing love for Edward, culminating in her embracing the Cullens blue pallet bey the end of 'Twilight' at the prom. I also worked to have Bella look like she didn't know how to dress for her new location and was a bit out of place when she landed there".

Y aunque la sencillez del estilo de Bella nos conquistó, tenemos que admitir que el vestuario de los Cullen acaparó las miradas de todos los espectadores. Hasta el momento siempre habíamos tenido una idea de los vampiros estereotipada, así que cuando vimos a Edward con ese rollo de tipo duro y esos jerséis grises de pico, nos quedamos, por decirlo de alguna manera, sorprendidas (y crusheadas). ¿Cuál fue la inspiración para vestir a la familia de los rostros pálidos? "Inmediatamente supe que no quería convertirlos en lo que ha llegado a significar 'vampiros' y repetir esas imágenes icónicas... y me llamó la atención la idea de que estaban 'atrapados en el tiempo/congelados en el tiempo' y eso me hizo pensar en colores más claros: blancos/plata/azules y grises, que es la paleta con la que terminaron. Me influyeron los colores del lobo ártico", nos explica la diseñadora.
And although the simplicity of Bella's style won us over, we have to admit that the Cullens' wardrobe grabbed everyone's attention. Up to this point we had always had a stereotypical idea of vampires, so when we saw Edward in that tough guy roll and those grey sweaters, we were, to say the least, shocked (and in love). How was the inspiration to dress the pale-faced family? "I knew immediately I didn't want to make them into what has come to signify 'vampires' and repeat such iconic images..and was struck with the idea that they were 'stuck in time/frozen in time' and that had me considering lighter colors: whites/silvers/blues and greys which is the pallet they ending up with. I was influenced by the colors of the arctic wolf", the designer tells us.

Recordamos a 'Crepúsculo' por una infinidad de cosas, pero si hay una escena que se ha quedado en nuestra memoria por siempre es la famosa secuencia del béisbol: "Los Cullen llevaban jugando al béisbol desde los años 20, así que pensé que era apropiado llevar algunos uniformes de época y mezclarlos. Todo eso ocurrió en un día con el reparto, todos juntos en la sede de Universal Costume, y fue un proceso de búsqueda de sus personajes y de lo que llevarían para esta gran secuencia juntos, que tenía que funcionar tanto como unidad/familia como definir sus personajes. También estaba trabajando con mis ideas de color, así que eso ya eliminaba opciones", cuenta Wendy.
We remember 'Twilight' for a myriad of things, but if there is one scene that has stayed in our memory forever it is the famous baseball sequence: "Cullens had been playing baseball since 1920’s so I thought it was appropriate to being in some vintage uniforms and mix it up.That all happened in one day with the cast all together at the Universal Costume location and it was a process of finding their characters and what they would wear for this big sequence together. It had to work both as a unit/family and also define their characters. Also I was working with my color ideas so that already eliminated options," Wendy explains.

Como los fans de la película sabrán, el escudo de los Cullen se incorpora en diferentes elementos del vestuario de los protagonistas. ¿Quién no recuerda la maravillosa gargantilla de Alice? "Propuse la idea de diseñar joyas de autor para la película y la oportunidad de comercialización y me alegré de que se llevara a cabo y de que las piezas se comercializaran. Pensé que los Cullen debían tener un escudo familiar y que cada personaje incorporaría este escudo de una manera característica... Alice llevaba el suyo como una cinta de terciopelo (influencia victoriana) y mandé hacer puños de cuero para los chicos. Rosalie llevó el suyo como un collar con una cadena de metal", nos explica Wendy.
As fans of the film will know, the Cullen crest is incorporated into different elements of the main characters' costumes. Who doesn't remember Alice's wonderful choker? "I pitched the idea of designing signature jewelry for the movie and the marketing opportunity and was happy to see that through and that the pieces were marketed. I thought the Cullens should have a family crest and that each character would incorporate this crest in a signature way… Alice wore hers as a velvet ribbon (victorian influence) and I had leather cuffs made for the guys. Rosalie wore hers as a necklace on a metal chain," the designer tells us.

‘Crepúsculo’ es la viva prueba de que para que un vestuario tenga trascendencia no tiene por qué ser de lo más llamativo. A veces, en la simplicidad está la magia. El estilo de Bella fue copiado por millones de fans que soñaban con ser como ella, así como muchos de nosotros no lo dudamos ni un segundo en comprar las joyas comercializadas de la familia Cullen para sentirnos, en cierta manera, parte de ellos. Si bien esta película pasará a la posteridad por ser un gran fenómeno a nivel cinematográfico, su vestuario quedará inmortalizado en nuestra memoria por reflejar a la perfección la identidad de unos personajes que inspiraron a generaciones de todo el mundo.
