¿Quién no ha deseado crecer más rápido siendo solo un niño? Anhelar esa aparente libertad de lo adultos y poder hacer todo lo que quieras... Algo demasiado bonito para ser cierto. Y aunque ahora sabemos que esos pensamientos idílicos no podían distar más de la realidad, todos hemos tenido esa faceta de pensar que seríamos más felices al llegar a los 18, a los 25 o a los 30.
Who hasn't wanted to grow up faster just being a kid? Longing for that apparent adult freedom and being able to do whatever you want ... Something too beautiful to be true. And although we now know that those idyllic thoughts could not be farther from reality, we have all had that facet of thinking that we would be happier when we reach 18, 25 or 30.

How does a 30-year-old girl who's actually 13 dress? To know a little more about the dresses worn by Jennifer Garner in the film, I had the pleasure of talking to Susie DeSanto, the film's costume designer. 'The Invention of Lying', 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green', 'Miss Congeniality', 'Nashville', 'Dirty John', 'One Fine Day', 'Mad Money' or the aforementioned '13 Going on 30' are just some of the productions where we can see the work of the designer.

'13 Going on 30' se estrenó en el 2004 y hasta día de hoy sigue siendo una película vista y adorada por generación tras generación. Con una trama atemporal y unos atuendos espectaculares, esta película explora el cambio que sufre Jenna Rink cuando pasa de tener 13 años a 30. Pero, por mucho que su apariencia haya cambiado, Jenna, en el fondo, sigue teniendo los mismos gustos que cuando era una adolescente, algo que hace que su vestuario sea muy interesante: "Mi inspiración para los atuendos de Jenna de 30 años surgió imaginando lo que estaría colgado en su armario. Cuando la Jenna de 13 años se despierta con el cuerpo de Jenna de 30, se encuentra en un hermoso apartamento de Nueva York con un armario enorme con la ropa y los accesorios más increíbles. ¡Y luego descubre que es editora de moda! '13 Going on 30' was released in 2004 and to this day remains a film watched and adored by generation after generation. With a timeless plot and spectacular costumes, this film explores the change Jenna Rink undergoes as she goes from being 13 to 30. But as much as her appearance has changed, Jenna, deep down, still has the same tastes as when she was a teenager, something that makes her wardrobe very interesting: "My inspiration for 30 year old Jenna’s costumes started by imagining what would be hanging in her closet. When 13 year old Jenna wakes up in 30 year old Jenna’s body she finds herself in a gorgeous NY apartment with a huge closet of the most amazing clothes and accessories. And then finds out she’s a fashion editor! Women who do that job have access to so many different brands, are invested in keeping up with latest trends and dress for work and for play. And most all prioritize how they present. Basically, the sky was the limit with what pieces we could work with, so it was really creative and so much fun", Susie tells us.

Although throughout the movie we see Jenna wearing amazing outfits, there is one in particular that really stuck with viewers. Yes, we are indeed talking about the dress that stars in the "Thriller" dance: "The dress was a Versace. We found a picture of it in a fashion magazine as inspiration for that costume and showed it to the director and producers. They loved it, thinking it was the perfect party dress for Jenna to discover in her closet with her 13 year old mind. It just worked so well for the scene with it’s splashy modern colors and babydoll silhouette. Then all we had to do was find it because it wasn’t available in the US at the time!", Susie explains.

Y aunque los conjuntos de Jenna son de por sí inolvidables, hay un elemento común en ellos que los hacen aún más únicos: los complementos. Atentos a la respuesta de Susie: "Los accesorios son muy importantes para mí cuando estoy creando un personaje. Me encantan las joyas y creo que esos detalles personales son muy reveladores sobre quién es alguien. And while Jenna's outfits are unforgettable in themselves, there is one common element in them that makes them even more unique: the accessories. "Accessories are super important to me when I’m creating a character. I love jewelry and I think those personal details are very telling of who someone is. Like the butterfly rhinestone necklace Jenna wears with her Versace dress, it just seemed exactly like what a 13 year old would be attracted to in a jewelry box. And then there’s the handbags in the movie! When we were shooting the film that was right when the status handbag was becoming a thing. Jenna had a huge collection of handbags including tons of Fendi baguettes, Chanel pieces and an Hermes’ Kelly bag. I think accessories are the finishing touch to any costume", tells us Susie.

A medida que Jenna se va encontrando a sí misma, su estilo evoluciona y vemos cómo pasa de outfits más extravagantes y de colores llamativos a atuendos más discretos y de tonos pastel. Pero, ¿cuáles son los conjuntos favoritos de la diseñadora? Ella misma nos lo cuenta: "Mis looks favoritos son los que usa cuando descubre su verdadero yo. Su innata dulzura optimista. Entonces, me encanta la falda lápiz rosa con el conjunto a juego que usa para su gran presentación. Y me encanta el look que usa con Matt cuando están en los columpios debajo del puente de Brooklyn. Fue muy divertido trabajar con los colores suaves y los patrones femeninos. Dicho todo esto, nunca podría haber existido una Jenna Rink sin Jennifer Garner. As Jenna finds herself, her style evolves and we see her move from more extravagant outfits and bright colors to more discreet outfits in pastel tones. But what are the designer's favorite outfits? She tells us herself: "My personal favorite costumes are the ones she wears when she’s discovering her true self. Her innate optimistic sweetness. So, I love the pink pencil skirt with the pink twin set she wears for her big presentation. And I love the costume she wears with Matt when they’re on the swings under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was so fun to work with the pretty soft colors and feminine patterns. All that being said, there could have never been a Jenna Rink without Jennifer Garner. She embodied that character so perfectly and I think that’s one of the reasons why everyone still loves the movie. Plus, who couldn’t use a fun romantic romp through New York these days".

La verdad es que sí, ¿quién no firmaría para dar un paseo por Nueva York bajo la luz de la luna y con un look así? '13 Going on 30' son de esas películas de las que siempre te acuerdas; quizá, simplemente, porque ves algo que te recuerda a ella, o porque resulta muy fácil identificarse con las dudas existenciales de la protagonista. O quizá porque escuchas "Thriller" y automáticamente en tu mente se proyecta ese colorido Versace. El vestuario de esta película no solo ha hecho que se convierta en una producción de referencia a nivel estético, sino que ha conseguido la difícil tarea de conquistar y enamorar a un público intergeneracional.
The truth is that yes, who wouldn't sign up for a walk in New York under the moonlight and with an outfit like this? '13 Going on 30' is one of those movies that you always remember; perhaps simply because you see something that reminds you of it, or because it is very easy to identify with the existential doubts of the protagonist. Or maybe because you hear "Thriller" and automatically in your mind is projected that colorful Versace. The wardrobe of this film has not only made it become a reference production at an aesthetic level, but it has achieved the difficult task of conquering and captivating an intergenerational audience.
