SECRETOS DE VESTUARIO: DETRÁS DE 'RIVERDALE'

Ser el encargado de vestir a un personaje de televisión conlleva la tarea implícita de participar en importantes decisiones para el desarrollo del carácter del sujeto como, por ejemplo, qué estilo refleja más su personalidad, qué tipo de prendas realzan su carácter, o qué paleta de colores lo define. Es curioso lo decisivo que puede ser asignar una serie de colores a un personaje, ya que será algo crucial para su desarrollo; no solo porque se deberá seguir con ellos hasta el final de sus días (si la evolución del personaje lo requiere, claro), sino también porque usar unos tonos u otros puede acentuar rasgos concretos del personaje. 

Being in charge of dressing a television character carries the implicit task of participating in important decisions for the development of the subject's character, such as, for example, which style reflects their personality the most, what type of clothing enhance their character, or what palette of colors define them. It's curious how decisive it can be to assign a series of colors to a character, because it'll be something crucial for their development; not only because they will be using them until the end of their days (if the evolution of the character requires it, of course), but also because using some tones can accentuate specific traits of the character.

La serie de la que vamos a hablar hoy se caracteriza, en materia de estilismo, por tener unas paletas de colores muy marcadas para los personajes, sobre todo para los femeninos. Solo con ver un par de capítulos de la serie podemos tener claro qué colores identifican a cada personaje, algo que refleja el gran trabajo de precisión que hay detrás del vestuario que vemos en pantalla. Que todos los personajes vistan de unas mismas tonalidades temporada tras temporada, sin perder la armonía y homogeneidad, y que, además, se logre fusionar la tonalidad con el estilo personal del personaje, es algo milagrosamente difícil de encontrar. O eso pensábamos hasta que 'Riverdale' llegó a nuestras vidas. 

The series we're going to talk about today is characterized, in terms of styling, by having very marked color palettes for the characters, especially for the female ones. Just by watching a couple of episodes, we can be clear about what colors identify each character, something that reflects the great precision work behind the costumes that we see on screen. That all the characters wear the same tones season after season, merging with their personal style, and without losing the harmony and homogeneity that identify their essence, is something miraculously hard to find. Or so we thought until 'Riverdale' came into our lives.

Los seguidores de la serie estarán de acuerdo conmigo cuando digo que 'Riverdale' no sería lo mismo si los estilos de las tres protagonistas femeninas no estuviesen tan marcados. Si pensamos en Betty Cooper, se nos vienen a la mente tonos pálidos, rosados y azulados, jerséis de canalé y, cómo no, una coleta alta; si nos fijamos en Veronica Lodge, nos imaginamos vestidos negros y morados, capas, collares de perlas y blonda oscura; y si reparamos en Cheryl Blossom, los vestidos rojos, los chokers y los largos abrigos son, indudablemente, los protagonistas. Pero, ¿cuál fue la inspiración para determinar todo esto?, ¿cómo se asignó una paleta de colores a cada protagonista?, ¿qué significado tiene? Para resolver estas dudas —y unas cuentas más— he tenido el placer de hablar con Rebekka Sorensen, al diseñadora de vestuario de la serie. 

Fans of the series will agree with me when I say that 'Riverdale' would not be the same if the style of the three female protagonists were not so marked. If we think about Betty Cooper, we come to think to pale, pink and blue shades, ribbed sweaters and, of course, a high ponytail; if we look at Veronica Lodge, we imagine black and purple dresses, capes, pearl necklaces and dark lace; and if we think about Cheryl Blossom, the red dresses, chokers and beautiful coats are undoubtedly the protagonists. But, what was the inspiration for determining all this? How was a color palette assigned to each protagonist? To resolve these doubts —and a few more accounts— I had the pleasure to interview Rebekka Sorensen, the costume designer of 'Riverdale'.

Rebekka ha sido la encargada del diseño del vestuario de la serie durante las cinco temporadas. Como la mayoría sabréis, 'Riverdale' es una serie de televisión basada en los cómics de Archie, algo que, entre muchas otras cosas, ha formado parte de la inspiración de la diseñadora: "La inspiración proviene de los personajes que interpretan, los viejos cómics y las revistas/webs de moda. Sin embargo, sus historias, sus acciones y acontecimientos específicos juegan un papel muy importante en la dirección que tomo con sus conjuntos y diseños", nos cuenta Rebekka. 

Rebekka has been in charge of designing the series' costumes for five seasons. As most of you may know, 'Riverdale' is a television series based on Archie’s comics, something that, among many other things, has been part of the designer’s inspiration: "The inspiration comes from the characters that they play, the old comic books and the web/fashion magazines. However their story lines, their actions and specific events play a part in what direction I go for their costumes and designs", tells us Rebekka.

Como hemos ido comentando, las protagonistas femeninas visten de acuerdo a una paleta de colores muy marcada, algo que sin duda alguna realza su carácter y su personalidad: "Tienes toda la razón cuando dices que tienen paletas de colores muy específicas. Betty, la hermosa chica de al lado con una silueta limpia y simple, pero a veces los momentos provocadores y sexys están escritos en el guión. Veronica Lodge de Nueva York con su elegante estilo de chica rica. Como es una mujer de negocios, es importante lograr ese equilibrio perfecto entre moda sofisticada y juvenil. Cheryl siempre tiende a destacar dondequiera que esté. Para ella, encuentro mucha inspiración mirando la moda vintage que me encanta mezclar con algunas tendencias de la moda moderna. Aprendes rápidamente qué silueta funciona mejor para cada elenco y el personaje que interpretan. También trato de inspirarme en tejidos, estampados y texturas, jugando con qué patrones funcionan bien juntos, qué telas cubren mejor y qué texturas funcionan bien en el personaje y se ven bien en la pantalla", explica la diseñadora. 

As we have been commenting, the female protagonists dress according to a very marked color palette, something that undoubtedly enhances their character and personality: "You are so right they have very specific color pallets. Betty the beautiful girl next door with a clean and simple silhouette,  but sometimes edgy and sexy moments are scripted.  Veronica Lodge from New York with her fashionable rich girl style.  As she's a business woman it's important to get that perfect balance of sophisticated fashion in a youthful way.  Cheryl always tends to stand out wherever she is.  For her I find lots of inspiration looking at vintage fashions that I love to mix with some modern fashion trends.  You learn quickly what silhouette works best for each cast and the character that they play.  I also try to find inspiration in fabrics, patterns and textures.  playing with what patterns work well together,  what fabrics drape the best and what textures works well on the character and looks good on screen", explains the designer.

Y el estilo tan personal de cada una y sus colores asociados no solo se reflejan en los atuendos del día a día, sino que se acentúan incluso más en los looks de fiesta: "Me encanta trabajar en estos episodios, aunque puede ser bastante estresante, ya que siempre tenemos un tiempo limitado. Cuando hay tiempo prefiero diseñar y hacer los vestidos en casa. Como tenemos una paleta de colores específica para cada uno de ellos, no siempre es fácil encontrar el estilo adecuado en las tiendas u online. La parte importante de un vestido perfecto es que el actor use el vestido y no al revés, LOL", comenta Rebekka. 

And the very personal style of each one and its associated colors are not only reflected in the day-to-day costumes, but are even more accentuated in the party looks: "I love working on these episodes even though it can be quite stressful as we are always limited on time. When there is time I prefer to design and have the dresses made in house.  As we have a specific color palette for each of them it's not always easy to find the right style in stores or online. The important part of a perfect dress is that the actor wears the dress and not the other way around, LOL", says Rebekka.

Y, obviamente, no podíamos hablar de vestidos de fiesta y estilo de las protagonistas sin preguntarle a Rebekka por su look favorito: "Creo que debo decir que uno de mis vestidos favoritos fue el que diseñé para Josie Mccoy. El vestido negro y amarillo que usó para una actuación en el Speakeasy 'As above, so below'. Ashleigh Murray se veía tan elegante con ese vestido y funcionó tan bien con su hermosa actuación. Uno de mis otros favoritos es el abrigo largo de tiro con arco rojo de Cheryl. Cheryl luce como nadie ese abrigo y funciona muy bien para sus acciones de tiro con arco que tiene que hacer. También la mantiene caliente durante los fríos meses de invierno de Vancouver".

And, obviously, we couldn't talk about the party dresses and the style of the protagonists without asking Rebekka about her favorite look: "I think I have to say that one of my favourite dresses was the one I designed for Josie McCoy. The black and yellow dress that she wore for a performance at the Speakeasy 'As Above, So Below'. Ashleigh Murray looked so elegant in that dress and it worked so well with her beautiful performance. One of my other  favourites is Cheryl's long red Archery coat. Cheryl rocks that coat and it works so well for her Archery actions that she has to do. It also keeps her warm during the cold Vancouver winter months".

Aunque hablamos de la importancia de los tonos a la hora de configurar un estilo, también es importante saber con qué marcas trabajar, ya que no todas encajan igual de bien para todos los personajes: "Tengo tantas marcas con las que me encanta trabajar… Por lo general, depende del tipo de look que elijamos, si es casual o si es para un momento elegante y, sobre todo, si los artículos están en oferta para que se ajusten a mi presupuesto, :) . Algunos de ellos son Moschino, Area, Baum und Pferdgarten, MAUD Norway, Sandro, Temperley London, Balmain, Alice and Olivia, Christopher Kane, Kate Spade, Zara, Yves Saint Laurent y Prada", nos confiesa Rebekka. 

Although we talk about the importance of tones when creating a style, it's also important to know which brands are better to work with, since not all of them fit equally well for all characters: "I have so many brands that I love to work with. It usually depends on what kind of look we are going for, if it's casual or if it's a dressy moment.  Are the items on sale so it fits within my budget :) A few of them are Moschino, Area, Baum und Pferdgarten, MAUD Norway, Sandro, Temperley London, Balmain, Alice and Olivia, Christopher Kane, Kate Spade, Zara, Yves Saint Laurent, and Prada", Rebekka confesses.

El vestuario de las protagonistas de 'Riverdale' es uno de los más cautivadores que hemos visto y que consiguen que, episodio tras episodio, deseemos ser Betty, Veronica y Cheryl (sí, todas a la vez) para poder tener en nuestro armario todos esos looks tan impresionantes. Durante las cinco temporadas de la serie, los personajes han evolucionado, han madurado y han pasado por innumerables altibajos, algo que se ha visto reflejado en su vestuario pero que no ha alterado en absoluto la razón de ser de su estilo. Rebekka Sorensen ha conseguido que millones de fans de alrededor del mundo no solo sigan viendo la serie por su emocionante trama, sino por el increíble vestuario que la acompaña. 

The  wardrobe of the protagonists of 'Riverdale' is one of the most captivating we have seen, and that makes that, episode after episode, we want to be Betty, Veronica and Cheryl (yes, all at the same time) to be able to have all those awesome looks in our closet. During the five seasons of the series, the characters have evolved, matured, and have gone through innumerable ups and downs, something that has been reflected in their wardrobe but that has not altered at all the rationale behind their style. Rebekka Sorensen has achieved that millions of fans around the world continue to watch the series not only because of its exciting plot but because of the incredible costumes that are shown in it.
