It is not the first time we talk about the styling of a Disney Channel series, but the occasion deserves it. At the beginning of the 2000's this great factory gave the green light to a series with a very ordinary and real teenage protagonist -perhaps too much for Disney- and that was, precisely, what conquered the audience. Well, that and an animated doll that represented the thoughts of the protagonist. Do you know who we are talking about?

Indeed, Lizzie McGuire was a worldwide phenomenon that lasts to this day. Although the expected reboot has not turned out as the fans imagined, we can always keep in mind the entertaining episodes starring a 13-year-old girl who showed us that life was not perfect and that you always learn from mistakes.

And yes, we loved the series because of the entertaining adventures of Lizzie (Hilary Duff), Miranda (Lalaine) and Gordon (Adam Lamberg), but also because of those flared pants, those colorful printed T-shirts and, of course, those headbands and necklaces that gave their outfits a personal and unique touch. Who wouldn't give anything to go back to 2001 and dress like her? I certainly wouldn't think twice about it. And to understand her style a little better and dream of that unique wardrobe, I had the pleasure of talking to Kimberly Adams, the costume designer of the first two seasons of the series.

In Kimberly Adams' portfolio we find productions such as 'Sneaky Pete', 'Stranger Things', 'Breakthrough', 'City on a Hill', 'Killing Reagan' -among many others- and, of course, 'Lizzie McGuire'. As you will all remember, Lizzie had a very personal and unique style, something that made her inimitable. But, what was Kimberly's inspiration to create such a unique and memorable style? She tells us: "I came to the series after the pilot was shot, and we did season 1 & 2 back to back. The creators wanted Lizzie to be more unique in her look from where the pilot began and wanted Lizzie to start to evolve her look. I remember first meeting Hilary Duff, she had just turned 11 that week, and she was carrying a vintage lunch pail for her handbag. We talked about her character and how she felt would combine things different than most girls so we started playing with mixing of patterns that worked with the interesting color mixes".

Kimberly also goes on to explain how she bought the clothes for Lizzie: "I literally method shopped like a teenage girl would in and out of malls. We were not online shopping then! I would come back with all kinds of options and we would have big fittings to build the closets. Hilary was great at taking all the patterns and mixing them. She made it her own and that’s what made it work!"

As we have mentioned, accessories were a very important part of the wardrobe of the female characters in the series: they not only gave them an identity, but also made the outfit stand out much more. "Accessories were the icing that gave each girl her own character. Hair accessories became a big part of that. It was fun to watch both Hillary and Lalaine testing the waters with how they put outfits together. I did give them a lot of freedom to play and that was fun to experience", says Kimberly.

Lizzie's character made us fall in love with countless looks that will go down in history and stay in our memories forever, but what was the designer's favorite look? "That is a long time ago, but my most distinct memory is my first episode where she is wearing the sweater her grandma gave her and she is horrified by it but her Mom insists she wears to school. It was this fabulously bad stuffed unicorn on a sweater. Looking back on that now that actually was where Lizzie broke out with her look. After that humiliation in the hallway at school wearing that sweater, she was determined to be her own unique character! The rest is history!!", Kimberly explains.
